The Back Room: News and Opinion

CHESTNUT AND SQUIRREL REOPENING in SHINJUKU (NICHOME)

MAY 29th, 2010

Chestnut and Squirrel had its Shibuya farewell in March due to the main leaseholder’s decision to close Liams. Despite Chu’s effort to negotiate with the owners to continue the lease and run Chestnut and Squirrel fulltime, the owner decided to rent it to a more corporate entity, a salaryman izakaya chain, as if there aren’t enough of those around already.

Since the bar’s closure, Chu and Cynthia have been seeking new venues where they can open a full-time cafe catering to the C&S crowd, the community, as well as food and drink lovers alike. This process is much harder than it seems, as property rentals are high and suitable spaces which do fit the price range are scarce. Though they have found some adequate locations, the search continues. The dream is by no means dead, and hopefully they’ll run into the same luck with negotiating a place, as with this new venue.

However recently, through the power of a supportive community and word of mouth, an opportunity has arisen to continue the Chestnut and Squirrel spirit closer to Tokyo’s queer district of Nichome. Since the bar, the sign reads MAMETA, is about the same size as the Shibuya location with a sizeably smaller kitchen area, Chu has decided to make the menu more specialized. Within the next few days, she’ll decide and post the intended menu for the opening night, MAY 29th, 2010.

Can’t wait to see you there!!!!

15 December 2009—-Dyke Weekend 2010 Announcement

Thanks,
Chu
2010 Sayonara Dyke Weekend
The famous Dyke Weekend, which usually happens every year on Golden Weekend, has been scheduled a few months earlier this year. It will be March 20-21st, which falls on a national holiday weekend. The dates have been changed due to some shifts in Japanese governmental policies.
After Chu caught a news story on TV about the Saitama Women’s Center losing its government funding, she thought she should book the Center for its last weekend. Because of this change, the center will make changes and more than likely become more expensive, thus making it a less desirable spot to hold the annual Dyke Weekends.
This year, since it may be the last Dyke Weekend in its long history, we encourage you to sign up early for a reservation, it’s going to fill up fast. Some highlights will be the softball game with a professional, all-girl lesbian softball team, a workshop on the history of Dyke Weekend and the Lesbian Movement in Japan, as well as other bilingual, sexy workshops bringing together the international community of beautiful ladies!
If you have any ideas for a workshop, or you’d like to help out in the planning of 2010 Sayonara Dyke Weekend, please email chuhigh@gmail.com.

Chestnut and Squirrel will enter their application for the 2009Fuji Rock Festival. The competition is very stiff, as only 30-50 vendors get chosen. The first step is to send in our menu, which we are now working on.  The deadline is at the end of the month, so if you have any suggestions for us, please let us know. If you happen to come to the bar this Wednesday, you can ask us about it.

The final episode of the L word was shown aired in America, and many fans were disappointed with the way it ended.  What is your opinion about it? If a spin-off or movie is made from this cliffhanger of an ending, will you watch it, and still remain a L-Word fan? Well, assuming you already were a fan;)
