Chestnut and Squirrel will be closing this March 2010. The last day will be April 23rd. Thank you for you love and participation throughout the years. As for the future, we are doing our best to find a location to open a full time cafe, so that we can keep the space open everyday. We appreciate all that you have contributed to the success of Chestnut and Squirrel.

THE BEGINNING
Chestnut & Squirrel started in July 2001, when a friend brought me to Minx bar in Shibuya. The owner was a gay woman named Miss Y, who was suffering from a kidney illness, and various people were running the bar for her every night.
One of the ladies, Ryo, was singing on the bar counter with a guitar. She later told me ”maybe you should do this on Wednesday, it’s still open to you, you can do it, and I’ll introduce you to miss Y”
From then on, it was really easy to set up. I felt like I needed to do something new, so I said, “okay, I’ll do it!”
When I told this to some friends, Laurie and Lizzy, Kim, Michelle, Silvana, my ex.. all of them said “You should do that, Chu!” So I went to the supermarket and shops, and bought some stuff for the bar. I shouldn’t say it loudly but some of the beer and alcohol came from US military base.
The first couple of months were quiet, and I didn’t get enough money to cover the cost, but… my friends still came and Laurie, Lizz and Kim were smiling at the bar counter, so it was okay, I thought.
The view from the bar counter is so special, which was something that we all knew.
Laurie Walters was the first bartender of C&S, (we need to book mark her name on history..he he…) and we shared that view and enjoyed chatting behind the kitchen, as well as learning about life. And that was the beginning…..
Over the past 8 years, the bar has welcomed countless women seeking a place to find other hot ladies and feel at home. Thanks to everybody who’s contributed their time, energy, creativity, and smiles to Chestnut and Squirrel. A special shoutout to the special bartenders over the years, Laurie, Hiromi, Kimmie, Jackie, and Lehela.
History is still in the making! Feel free to comment and share your fondest memories of your time at Chestnut and Squirrel.
